  • Comment on the readability of this article.

To me this article wasn’t hard to read but also wasn’t easy to read.  But I was able to follow along.  Although I am not extremely familiar with the terms relating to depression I ways able to continue reading and find out definitions for words I did not understand.

  • Course Topics covered:

Depression in different ages of adolescents/children as well as appropriate ways to treat each age/type of depression.

  • Brief Summary:

This article explains that depression is found at all levels and ages of childhood. It explains that there are many variables that aid in the role of depression in children.  This article explains the causes, signs/symptoms associated with, and different treatment options of depression

Identify and attempt to explain three (3) terms, procedures or concepts that were unfamiliar to you when reviewing this article.

First of all I didn’t realize how big of an issue childhood depression really is, or that depression really even affected children, maybe I’m na………………………ive.

With that said 3 things that I am unfamiliar with are:

1.  Dysthymic disorder:  which is categorized in table 1 as “Depressed/irritable mood for most of the day, for more days than not (by subjective account or observation by others) for one year, including the presence of two of the following symptoms: Poor appetite/overeating Insomnia/hypersomnia Low energy or fatigue Poor concentration/difficulty making decisions felling of hopelessness”

2.  I have also never heard of the pediatric checklist.  Which is explained right under figure one as: “The Pediatric Symptom Checklist is a 35-item checklist designed to be filled out by parents of six- to 12-year-old children to assess their impressions of their children's psychosocial function.”

 3.  I also didn’t realize how many different types of depression disorders that there were; examples: Sadness variation, Bereavement, Sadness problem, Adjustment disorder with depressed mood, Major depressive disorder, Dysthymic disorder, Bipolar I disorder, most recent episode depressed, Bipolar II disorder, recurrent major depressive episodes with hypomanic episodes.

Detail the strengths/weaknesses of this article.

I think that the article was strong in all the knowledge and information that it portrayed.  This article really informed me on a lot of things that I was unaware of.  However, its weakness is part of its strength; in that although it explained all the important childhood depression issues, I think that for a lot of people that may read this, example a parent with a depressed child, may get lost in the advanced terminology.  Although it is necessary to use these terms in this article, may “dumbing” it down so that everyone can understand it, and not just students in the medical field or with any medical background.

  • How might this article be useful to you in your further studies and career?

This article will be helpful for me in the fact that I plan on having children one day and have informed me on things to look for and ways to help childhood depression.  Also I want to work in pediatrics once I graduate, so it has opened my eyes to a lot.

  • Does the article include a list of references/citations that can be used to find more information on the topics they cover?

Yes there are multiple references at the bottom of the article.
